
The U.S. Public Health Service released the following statistics related to the influenza season.
-10-20% of the entire population of the U.S. contracts the flu each year
-40 million people in this country require outpatient doctor visits and 114,000 hospitalizations occur
-36,000 Americans die from complications associated with influenza
-most deaths occur in the population over 65 years of age; young children account for the second highest number of influenza related deaths
-peak activity occurs in January and February
-the fall is the ideal time for vaccination
-modern flu vaccine injections do not contain live viruses and will not make you sick
